WHAT IS CITES?
The ‘Washington’ Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, more commonly known as CITES, aims to protect certain plants and animals by regulating and monitoring their international trade to prevent it reaching unsustainable levels.
SIGNET RING HISTORY
Some of the first recorded uses of signets date back to ancient Mesopotamia, where gold rings were found with identifying script – a mark of authenticity and origin. These rings were used to mark and seal documents by pressing its face into hot wax, as a signature. From then to the Middle Ages, the signet ring acquired increased significance for people of influence and power. All the royal houses in Europe and other noble families had their flags, coats of arms, crests and full heraldic devices passed on through generations, guaranteeing the authenticity of documents and their own place in society at the time.
SEAL ENGRAVING
Traditional seal engraving is the most popular method of engraving signet rings and have been used for centuries to create an impression of a design or emblem onto a surface. An image is hand carved in reverse with deep relief onto metal, with fine details meticulously honed to achieve a perfect finish. Hand engraving not only honours the tradition of the signet, but also imparts the piece with a unique, personalised finish – a true testament of the skill of Asprey craftsmen.
